Maratona is fantastically soft! It does tend to split, but I really didn't see this as a problem. The only trouble I had with an otherwise "perfect" yarn is the tendency of the ball to fall apart. The quick fix for this, I found, was to wind my own ball with a wool winder.

The sweater for which this project is still on needles is an Aran. This yarn appears to be cabled, hence the stitch definition is wonderful. Unlike other merino yarns, the tight twist of the yarn makes it ideal for stitch patterns since the soft fibers are not pilling and hiding the stitches. I'd say, "two thumbs up" (both of mine ;-) on this one! Maratona also makes a wonderful wool substitute for smooth, cotton yarns. The finished product makes for a very light, transseasonal garment.

Excellent quality; a few knots in one out of thirteen balls. Some splitting, but not bad.

A gorgeous yarn, beautiful soft hand. Looks great for Aran or cable patterns, really shows stitch definition. I will use it again.

There is a little
splitting as others
have mentioned, but
when I use Addi turbos
with their wide, smooth
points, it only splits
when I'm trying
something complicated
like k3tog.

I'm thrilled to have the chance to review my FAVORITE yarn. I have made three projects from this yarn and love them all. It's so soft for wool yarn, sometimes people think it's cotton. But it has all those nice wool qualities like springiness and memory. It's also a lot lighter than most cottons of a similar gauge. My first Maratona project was a basketweave cardigan for my husband from Vogue Knitting, which called for this yarn. The cardigan hangs beautifully and really shows off the stitch work. Next two sweaters were for me. I love wearing this wool against my skin. It is soft and unscratchy, and lightweight enough for California!

It feels great in the
ball and while
knitting. I loved it
so much that I bought a
lot of it - and then I
discovered that it
stretches unbelievably
when washed!

Other comments:
I will never use this again. I made two garments - a sweater, and a hat - at the recommended gauge. Each got at least 20% bigger with the first washing. I gave up on the hat - gave it to my relative with the largest head. The sweater I kept, and the second wash made it even bigger, and the yarn now is stiff and has no elasticity whatsoever. Mind you, I washed by hand in cold water, with no agitation at all, rolled in towels gently, then laid it flat to dry - and still it is now completely unwearable. When I complained to the shop where I bought it, the saleswoman just shrugged - had no suggestions on how to clean this stuff.

My favorite sweater knit
with this is at least 10
years old. I wear it
all the time. It holds
its shape even in the
ribbing shows no signs
of pilling , has not
faded and has been had
washed again and again
all these years.

This is my all-time favorite yarn. I have been knitting for over 50 years and have used almost every kind of yarn available.
